Building Trust with a Parrot WITHOUT Training

Published on January 09, 2025

Parrot training is a very useful way to gain a parrot's trust. How can you get a parrot to trust you without training? This video explores ways to build a parrot's trust without parrot training.

First off, you have to be really patient and avoid rushing. Any time you try to get results quickly, a parrot is less likely to gain trust. Parrots are prey animals so they are always on the look out for anything that is quick moving and resist pressure to do anything quickly. Building trust takes time.

Like patience, it is important to be calm around a parrot. Being energetic and exciting may be fun and your parrot may well enjoy it. However, these do not help build trust. Being in a calm state and moving in a calm way helps build parrot trust.

Be predictable. Do things in a similar way every time and make your movements predictable as you approach. Let the parrot know what you are going to do before you even do it.

Don't do bad things to your parrot. This is important not to undo trust you've been slowly building. And I'm not just talking about the obvious things or being downright mean. Even small things like putting the parrot back in the cage when it doesn't want to go in, taking the parrot out when it doesn't want to come out, or making a parrot step up can all hurt trust.

Trust building happens at the parrot's pace. Don't compare to other parrots. Each bird is uniquely different and the pace at which they develop trust will vary.

Lower your expectations. Building trust with an undomesticated prey animals is slow and limited. Even more so without training. Some things may happen very slowly whereas others may not be possible without the use of methodical parrot training.

Whether you employ any parrot training or not, these concepts will surely help gradually improve a companion parrot's trust with you. Take your relationship to new levels, expedite the trust building, have fun in the process, and build a more robust relationship by adding some parrot training.
