Why Do Parrots Bite?

Published on March 13, 2025

https://ParrotWizard.com
Why do parrots bite? It is so unusual for a pet to bite the hand that feeds them, yet with companion parrots it is so common. The first step to building a great relationship that doesn't involve biting is to understand why parrots bite in the first place. This video is about why pet parrots bite, what causes parrots to bite, and some starter solutions to minimize biting in parrots.

Parrots are herbivorous prey animals so biting and attacking is the last thing you would expect from them. And that is normally true. Parrots have a fight or flight response and it should really be called flight or fight because they sooner choose to fly away than to fight. After all parrots are small and fragile and putting up a fight isn't in their best interest.

Most commonly parrots bite because they are unable to fly away. Humans have cleverly come up with ways to prevent parrots from flying away when they have them as pets. This is often done by clipping their wings by cutting off the outter primary feathers hindering the bird's ability to fly. So, every time the parrot is presented with a scenario where it would naturally fly off, it has no options remaining except biting.

Even without clipped wings, a parrot's ability to naturally fly off is often limited. Inside the cage the parrot does not have an option to fly off if you reach your hands inside to take the parrot out or even just to arrange the cage. Even out of the cage, the parrot's ability to fly off may be limited by the walls and ceiling of the room. This is why pet parrots may seem so bitey, they are reduced to just the biting option of flight or fight.

Learn how to keep your parrot flighted but cooperative, friendly and tame, and develop a mutual magical relationship built on love and trust with some help from Parrot Wizard.
