Kili Senegal Parrot - Flies Recall Flights To My Hand

Published on September 24, 2009

When I call Kili she flies to me and lands on my hand. For the last few weeks, I have been actively training my Senegal Parrot recall training. That is to fly to me when I call her. She is getting to be quite good at it, especially considering that she didn't even know she could fly just two weeks ago.

Just to give you a scale of reference for the distances she is flying, on the shorter flights she is going abut 20 feet and the longest ones are 60 feet. When she keeps flying to the side that's because she's flying back to land on her cage rather than back to the training perch. For some reason on one of the return flights to perch she changes her mind and turns around and bounces off a wall as she comes back. She bounced right off and kept going so I knew she was fine but she was a bit panicked so she zoomed right past me. Kind of reminds me of a toddler tripping over himself, getting up and running on.

Someone once tried to talk me out of keeping a flighted bird telling me that they are a danger to themselves if they fly. At this point I couldn't believe that to be further from the truth. She used to crash much harder and worse into walls when she was clipped and didn't know how to fly rather than now. The bump you may have seen in the video is nothing compared to when she flew straight into the wall and fell down because she didn't know to turn. Since training her to fly, she has become much more maneuverable and a safer flier. However, I am not endorsing indoor or outdoor flight for anybody else. Please consider the pros/cons and risks involved and make that decision for yourself.

So that is where I am after exactly two weeks of recall training Kili since she has refledged. She still has some feathers to go even but that isn't holding her back!

If you missed her previous videos about getting her started flying, here they are:
