Train Parrot to Let You Touch Anywhere

Train Parrot to Let You Touch Anywhere

Published on October 27, 2024

How do I teach my parrot to let me touch it on the body? How can you touch a parrot on the chest? How to handle a macaw's tail? This video is about how to use training to teach your parrot to allow you to touch anywhere on the body.

Don't take for granted that just because you trained your parrot to let you touch on the head that now it is ok to touch the parrot elsewhere on the body. Instead, repeat the same training steps as explained in a prior Parrot Academy video about how to train a parrot to touch on the head, on other parts of the body.

However, once the parrot is very familiar with this approach on the head, repeating the steps for other parts of the body will go much faster. Show your hand from afar, take it away and give a treat. Show it closer to the new place you want to touch but then take your hand away and give a treat. Get closer and closer until you can touch. Soon your parrot will let you use this method to touch on the back, stomach, feet, or tail.

Once the bird is taught to allow you to touch anywhere, STOP. Do not continue touching the parrot in these places because it can be arousing and cause hormonal behavior. This training is done to gain maximum trust and to ensure that you can touch any place if needed. However, restrict your casual day to day petting to the head only. Practice touching parts of the body for treats just once in a while to maintain the behavior but without touching excessively.
