Perches are an essential part of a parrot's environment. Aside from flying, parrots spend all day on their feet! They don't get to lay down and give their feet a rest. So, it is very important to provide a wide range of comfortable perches for them to stand on and exercise their feet.

Perches should be the appropriate thickness for the bird's size. The parrot should be able to wrap its toes half to 3/4 of the way around the perch. Provide a variety of perch thicknesses to help exercise their feet and keep them from getting stiff in the same position all the time. Do not use dowel perches or natural perches that are excessively uniform as they can cause sores and joint problems. Ample perching provides places to walk and exercise. Place perches throughout the cage to give your bird good access to toys to stay engaged, busy, and quiet.

To help your parrot get around the cage, place a few full-length custom perches that cross the entire cage. Place bolt on perches throughout the cage but particularly where a parrot needs access such as near food bowls, water bottles, toys, and by the door. Parrots tend to prefer to sleep on the highest perch in the cage so be sure to place a very comfortable and size-appropriate cage in the highest position. Use a Grooming Perch near the water to help keep nails from growing rapidly and for the parrot to clean it's beak.
