Why A Parrot Doesn't Want to Come Out - Cagebound Parrots

Published on August 07, 2025

Why are some parrots cagebound? How comes this Cockatoo doesn't want to come out of the cage? This video is about birds that would rather stay in their cage than spend time out of the cage.

You would think a parrot would enjoy being out of the cage, flying, playing, and spending time around the family. Yet, many parrots would just rather stay in their cage. Parrots are prey animals and safety is their top priority.

Staying inside the cage is a parrot's safe place. It's one place where nothing happens to them.

This Major Mitchell's Cockatoo is a particularly nervous bird and is not eager to come out of the cage. In fact, he would rather stay in the cage. So, I have been doing a lot of positive reinforcement training to build a better connection and trust. I teach the Pink Cockatoo to feel safe in the training I provide. He is gradually learning that following the target stick is very safe and keeps other things that make him nervous away. When he sees the target stick, everything else freezes and nothing else is happening. He can think at his own pace, approach at his own pace, touch the stick, earn a treat, and eat in peace.

There can be many reasons a parrot is cagebound but typically it is because they feel unsafe out of the cage. Often it can be because the interactions the parrot has with people out of the cage are unpredictable. Training not only teaches the parrot what to do but also makes us more predictable to the bird so they feel safer.

Parrot Wizard has all the tools to help you befriend any parrot and build greater trust.
