What Happens if I Touch This Macaw On the Back?

Published on January 09, 2026

https://ParrotWizard.com
Is it harmful to touch a parrot's back? What will happen if I touch my macaw on the back? Does it hurt a parrot if you touch the bird on the back?

This video explains exactly how and where I can touch this Great Green Macaw parrot baby.

I received some comments from people freaking out that I touch this macaw on the back. Rest assured, it is not harmful one bit and is in fact part of his upbringing. In order for this macaw to grow up as friendly and hand tame as possible, I get him used to being touched, held, and handled anywhere on the body.

Because this Buffon's macaw is a baby, it cannot cause him to be hormonal or aggressive. The purpose is to get him used to and extremely trusting of hands no matter where they go. Some day this could be extremely helpful such as during a veterinary visit. However, in the meantime, it just gets him to be at complete ease and trust with hands.

It is important not to stroke or pet an adult parrot on the back, under the wings, and frankly anywhere but the head, especially in a loving way. However, this only applies if the parrot is an adult, is in the mood, and actually likes you. Trust me, petting a parrot's back that doesn't like you isn't going to turn the bird on. However, if the parrot likes you, it is important to avoid stimulating the bird because it can lead to all sorts of trouble. This isn't limited to touching on the back. Even showing excessive affection without contact can lead to it. So, it's all about moderation instead.

Because it isn't always clear when a parrot transitions from being a baby to an adult, it's better to avoid the kind of contact on the back that would be stimulating if the parrot were an adult. For this reason, I generally don't pet or stroke the parrot on the back (or at least not with any pressure that would cause this sensation). Instead, I touch, grab, or hold the macaw on the back instead. Sometimes hugging the macaw to provide warmth and comfort. And at other times, I turn the macaw and let him lay on his back in my hand.
