Quaker Parrot Learning to Come Out

Published on July 10, 2025

My Quaker Parrot is learning to come out of the cage! He's been fantastic at target training all about the cage, so now I've been targeting onto a handheld perch.

The training tools I'm using are:
Clicker - https://ParrotWizard.com/Clicker
Target Stick - https://ParrotWizard.com/Clicker_Target
Treats - Saflower Seeds
Handheld Perch - https://ParrotWizard.com/Perch

The handheld perch is just an extra NU Perch like he has in his cage. Because he's already spent time getting used to his cage and perches, this type of perch is super familiar to him. Parrot Wizard makes Training Perches, Trees, Scales, Stands, and more with NU Perches so once the bird gets used to one, it is familiar with them all.

I direct the Quaker Parrot to come himself and step onto the perch I'm holding. It's merely an extension of the perches he has inside his cage. I do not use my hands just yet. On one hand it's to avoid getting bit, but it's also to help the bird be more comfortable and to start taking him out sooner than he would be used to my hands.

This definitely is not "stick training." We do not force the bird onto the stick by pressing the stick against their belly. This leads birds to be resentful, bitey, scared, uncomfortable, and usually results in wing clipping because they'll just fly off if you push them. That is an obsolete and unfriendly method of picking up a bird.

Using positive reinforcement and my training tools, the progress is going great! He is getting more comfortable, more confident, and knows just what to do! However, I don't get too far ahead of myself and start taking him out and about. We gotta make sure he knows how to go back into the cage and doesn't start bumping around the room getting hurt. So, a few days of practicing coming in and out of the cage and we'll be ready to expand our training further by going onto a Training Perch. Not long till he's a friendly pet.
