How Do You Keep a Quaker Parrot From Flying All About the House?

How do you have a Quaker Parrot out of the cage but not flying all about the house and getting into trouble? It's wonderful to have a Monk Parakeet out of the cage, but it can also be difficult if the bird is ready to fly and land on anything. We don't want the parrot to fly into things and get hurt. We can't have the bird chewing on things that may be unsafe. And it may just be all around undesirable to have the bird chewing up our stuff.

This video is about how to teach a Quaker Parrot to be out of the cage in a good way and not be causing trouble.

1. Provide the parrot with great places to go that are better than the kitchen cabinets, curtain rods, and other undesirable places for them to land. Parrot Wizard has a wide variety of trees and stands that serve this purpose! Outfit the trees with plenty of toys because they gotta have safe stuff to chew up.

2. Practice flight recall training. This helps teach the Quaker Parrot that he wants to fly to me and to his perch. When the parrot is practicing flying to me or the perch, he is also practicing not flying to undesirable places in the home. A Parrot Wizard Training Perch helps facilitate this exercise very well!

Flight training provides great exercise and keeps the parrot engaged. It also helps tire the parrot out! Now that he's had some flying, he will be more eager to sit on a tree stand and relax rather than flying everywhere.

3. Don't keep the bird out for too long. Eventually they just get bored and have a desire to cause mischief. It is better to have more short sessions rather than keeping the bird out for a single long time. This helps form better habits and shape the way the parrot spends the time out of the cage in the future. As these habits become stronger and the stamina increases, the parrot can be out for longer periods of time with less undesirable behavior.

Clipping wings isn't the solution because then the bird is "caged" by the wing clip wherever you place it. Losing their natural means for getting around causes physical and mental harm and many unintended behavioral problems.
