Practicing Step Up With Blue and Gold Macaw

Published on January 04, 2018

I've been doing a lot of step-up practice with Rachel my Blue and Gold Macaw. Rachel is my wife's bird and she has has her since before we even met. But, through training and proper care, I've gotten Rachel to warm up to me as well.

For the last few years, Rachel has been going through terrible twos. She is going through an adolescent period where she is cranky, has frequent mood swings, changing allegiances with people, and just all around troublesome. In most parrots, this leads to them being rehomed or neglected. We have been able to greatly moderate the effects of the adolescence through training but some problems still show through.

So this is a video of how I have the parrot practice doing step ups from different locations around the bird room. Keep in mind, she has already been trained to step up using clicker, target, and positive reinforcement. This video is not a how to video about teaching step up. She already knows how to step up but sometimes doesn't want to. This video is about using positive reinforcement to remind the parrot why it wants to step up and get it to be reliable at stepping up once more.
