Want a Free Parrot?

Do you want a free parrot? Doesn't it sound great when someone offers to give you a parrot at no cost, free of charge? Well, unfortunately some things are too good to be true and this is one of them.

People rarely consider the overall cost of responsible parrot keeping. Parrots are rare, exotic, complicated pets that are quite expensive to sustain at home in the long run. For example, even if you were given a $1,000 parrot for free, you could likely expect to have to spend a full $1,000 for a starter set of parrot keeping supplies and initial vet checkup. Then, you can expect to spend $1,000 every year just to keep that parrot. A yearly vet check up, replacement perches, toys, bird food are all costly items.

Take a 5 year old Amazon parrot for example. Let's say it lives to 50 years and originally cost $1,000. Someone gives you the bird for free but you its care ends up costing $1,000 a year for the rest of its life. 45 years x $1,000 is $45,000. The $1,000 you'd save by getting the bird for free only amounts to 2% of what it would cost to keep that parrot for the rest of its life expectancy. I doubt many people would blink an eye over a 2% sale at a shopping store!

So, the moral of the story is that there is no such thing as a free pet parrot. They all cost a lot of money to keep and it is important to avoid the temptation of accepting a free bird that you otherwise wouldn't be able to afford to acquire.
